With bruised legs, cuts on fingers, and sore forearms, we climbed Ton Sai and Railay.
We left Krabi by long tail boat and made it to Railay East Beach on Wednesday, not knowing where to stay. We found a bungalow getaway equipped with fan, mosquito net, and no sink. The bungalow was situated in the highlands of Railay and had limited electricity and no WiFi. It was common to have the water not work. We had a good time climbing in Railay and watching experienced and novice climbers enjoy the challenge of climbing. We rented all the gear for 1600 baht, which is roughly $50. Totally worth the experience. Next time we ventured to southern Thailand, it's going to be a climbing trip and we are bringing our own gear so we can access more. Start saving your monies now, if you want to join us.
Our time at Railay also took us Deep Water Solo Climbing (DWSO). DWSO is climbing over water without gear, so if you fall you hit water. Rule number one in DWSO: only climb as high as you are willing to jump. We experienced a lot of hesitation from people who enjoyed climbing without realizing how high they were. All-in-all, we had a great time and would recommend it to anyone.
Our last night at Railay brought another hardship. Shelley woke up with multiple trips to the bathroom during the night. However, with the bug net, it was like we were camping because you don't want to get out, but you know you have to. She faired ok and we made it to Krabi for an overnight bus to Bangkok.
South of Bangkok there are two major tourist transportation companies, Lomprayah and Songserm. We had previously only used Lomprayah's services and this time we booked with Songserm.
The company picked us up at 4pm on Saturday and we were suppose to leave at 5:30pm. Our bus didn't even show up until 7:15ish and we left. The bus was definitely the lowest quality of our bus experiences and Spike commented as we pulled out, if there was a company bus to break down, between Lomprayah and Songserm, Songserm would be the one. Two hours after we left, when everyone was comfortable, the bus stops and the Thai bus mom yelled from below, "Bangkok change bus." The lights flipped on and it was a mad scramble to decode the message, gather your stuff, and get your bag to the new bus. The new bus was nicer quality than the first. The seats were much more comfy, but mounted super high. Spike felt like his mom at the movie theater because he couldn't touch the floor and needed a booster seat for his feet to touch. At 1:45am, the bus stopped again and we hear the Thai bus mom yell again, "Last stop for food and to buy something!" That's when it dawned on us, what a story. We are in the middle of nowhere Thailand at 2am and having a food break at a random food stand.
We finished up, got back on the road and worked our way to Bangkok. When the light had touched the sky, we could see the skyline of Bangkok in the distance. Then the bus stopped. The motor turned off, which means no a/c and we heard tools hit the ground. Sure enough, the bus broke down. We were stationary for 45 minutes as the driver and his wife would tinke
r in the engine compartment and turn on the motor, then turn off the motor and tinker some more. By this time it was 7am and we were wondering if we'd make it to church.
The bus started up, we made it to church, changed in the bathroom, brushed our teeth and were able to get breakfast at 7-Eleven all before church started at nine. Now we're resting at our last hotel in Thailand. Enjoy some pictures of Railay.
